Ericeira – A Picturesque Fishing Village and Surfing Destination

Ericeira is one of Portugal’s most charming coastal towns and one of the most popular day trips from Lisbon for visitors looking for a combination of traditional culture, beautiful beaches and Atlantic scenery. Located around 50 kilometres northwest of Lisbon, the town is known for its whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets, fresh seafood and strong connection to surfing.

The historic centre is ideal for exploring on foot, with traditional houses decorated with blue details, small squares, local shops and cafés. Ericeira was historically an important fishing village, and its maritime heritage remains an important part of the town’s identity. Visitors can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere while discovering viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Ericeira is particularly famous for its beaches. Praia dos Pescadores sits directly below the historic centre and is one of the town’s most accessible beaches. Nearby, Praia de São Julião, Praia da Foz do Lizandro and Praia da Calada offer beautiful sandy beaches surrounded by cliffs and natural landscapes. The coastline provides excellent opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, walking and enjoying the dramatic Atlantic scenery.

The town is also internationally recognised for its surfing. In 2011, Ericeira became the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe, protecting several kilometres of coastline and a number of important surf spots. Visitors can watch experienced surfers or take lessons at one of the local surf schools, making Ericeira an excellent destination for both beginners and experienced surfers.

Beyond its beaches, Ericeira has several cultural attractions worth discovering. The Igreja de São Pedro is one of the town’s most important churches and features traditional Portuguese decorative elements. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem is another notable landmark, reflecting the town’s historic connection with fishermen and the sea.

Food is another highlight of Ericeira. Its fishing heritage means that fresh fish and seafood are central to the local cuisine. The town has numerous restaurants serving traditional Portuguese dishes, making it an excellent place to stop for lunch while enjoying views of the Atlantic.

For visitors travelling from Lisbon, Ericeira is ideal for a full-day private tour. The town can also be combined with the nearby National Palace of Mafra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, creating a varied day of coastal and cultural sightseeing. Private transportation allows visitors to explore several beaches and viewpoints without worrying about parking or navigating unfamiliar roads.

Practical tip: Ericeira can be particularly busy during summer weekends, so an early departure is recommended. The Atlantic climate can also be windy and cooler than Lisbon, making a light jacket useful even during warmer months. Comfortable shoes are advisable for exploring the cobbled streets and coastal viewpoints.
